Fr. Frederick Mazzarella, a long-time and much-loved priest of the Archdiocese of Toronto, died on Good Friday from complications of lung cancer.

During his 87 years, Fr. Fred served as a missionary in Central America, a hospital chaplain, the first chaplain of the Toronto Police Service and a pastor. Many knew Fr. Fred from his time at St. Francis Assisi Parish (1995-2012), in west-end Toronto, where he was a key figure in organizing the annual Good Friday procession.

The archdiocese thanks the Toronto Sun for writing a memorial article about Fr. Fred.

Due to physical distancing provisions mandated by the Government of Ontario, there will not be a public funeral Mass for Fr. Fred until the state of emergency is lifted. Further information on his funeral Mass will be provided when it is available.
