Sunday Mass Obligation

Posted : Jun-11-2022

Just a reminder for those who may have missed the announcement last week, we will no longer be livestreaming the Masses after this week. The dispensation from Sunday Mass attendance has now ended, and the obligation to attend Sunday Mass is once again in effect.

The Code of Canon Law states:

Can. 1247 On Sundays and other holy days of obligation, the faithful are obliged to participate in the Mass.

Moreover, they are to abstain from those works and affairs which hinder the worship to be rendered to God, the joy proper to the Lord’s day, or the suitable relaxation of mind and body.

Of course the Church does not ask for what is impossible. The Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds us:

CCC 2181 The Sunday Eucharist is the foundation and confirmation of all Christian practice. For this reason the faithful are obliged to participate in the Eucharist on days of obligation, unless excused for a serious reason (for example, illness, the care of infants) or dispensed by their own pastor. Those who deliberately fail in this obligation commit a grave sin.
