IN SEARCH OF TRUTH

Posted : Jan-22-2017

In this week's homily, I tried to make the point that it is our responsibility to educate ourselves in our Catholic faith- To seek the truth is ultimately to seek Christ.  In St. John's Gospel, Jesus tells us "I am the way, and the truth and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through me" (John 14:6).  As much as our modern mind would like to say that the truth (and therefore Christ) changes, the letter to the Hebrews tells us otherwise;  "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.  Do not be carried away by all kinds of strange teachings..." (Hebrews 13:8-9a).

In my homily, I spoke about St. Thomas Aquinas and our misuse of the phrase, "Invincible ignorance", to excuse ourselves and others from guilt.  St. Thomas Aquinas' Summa Theologiae question 76, article number two, the paragraph "I answer that" gives us a precise definition and application of this phrase.

I concluded my homily with paragraph 84 from St. John Paul II encyclical letter, Veritatis Splendor  I recommend, if it is possible, that you read this document as a starting point in your search for truth in a world that pulls us in so many different directions.
